If the refugee is today's tragic icon of a war-torn world, then Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, a reggae-inflected band born in the camps of West Africa, represents a real-life story of survival and hope. The six-member Refugee All Stars came together in Guinea after civil war forced them from their native Sierra Leone. Traumatized by physical injuries and the brutal loss of family and community, they fight back with the only means they have -- music. The result, as shown in "Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars," is a tableau of tragedy transformed by the band's inspiring determination to sing and be heard.

This month, I want to tell you about my four-year-old granddaughter, Olivia, who lives in Argyle, Texas. Last week she decided that she wanted to help "poor kids." At first she decided to take her extra toys to school and sell them to raise money, but the school had policies that wouldn’t allow that. So instead she used an old shoebox, made a plea from her heart, and asked the class for donations. That day she raised $6.27! I was really proud of her – not just because of her initiative, but mostly because of her generous and caring heart. It has inspired me this month to “keep on keeping on.”

This month has been an especially difficult one at the Children’s Center. We have not had running water for almost 2 months now and electricity is very scarce. Everyday we have to hire vehicles to take the launderers (and the piles of laundry) to a place to find water in which to wash. The cost for the generator fuel is exorbitant. It is hard to believe that when things are this bad in Sierra Leone, our costs actually rise, but it is true. Please keep us in your prayers and consider ways you might be able to help raise the funds we need.
